The Context
Two-dev team, ~120 hrs/mo AI coding. Jan–Apr 2026: Cursor Pro ($20) primary. May 2026: Cursor 3.0 launched with “Design Mode” (gestures/voice) but Composer context loss persisted; $200 Ultra tier gated “more agentic” features. Ran 30-day structured rotation: 10 days each on Cursor Pro, Windsurf, VS Code + Claude Code — same tasks, same team.

Day 18 (Windsurf): Refactored auth module across 12 files. Cascade agent: wrote tests, ran them, fixed failures, updated types, opened PR — zero context resets. Day 25 (VS Code + Claude Code): Same task. cc in terminal: identical autonomy, but also ran DB migration, deployed to staging, verified health checks. Realization: dedicated editor (Windsurf) wins vs Cursor; terminal agent (Claude Code) wins vs dedicated editor.
What We Use Now
Primary: VS Code + Claude Code (see VS Code + Claude Code setup)
- Terminal agent = workflow autonomy (tests, migrations, deploys, health checks)
- Credit pool $100/mo fixed cap
- VS Code for editing/debugging — best-in-class TypeScript IntelliSense
Secondary: Windsurf ($15/mo) — kept for specific scenarios:
- New team members unfamiliar with terminal agents (lower learning curve)
- “Vibe coding” sessions: voice/gesture Design Mode equivalent via Cascade chat
- Offline/airplane work (Windsurf local models via Ollama integration)
Retired: Cursor Pro — cancelled June 5, 2026

- Kept 1 seat for emergency VS Code/Copilot compatibility testing
When You’d Choose Differently
