Gen 3 vs Gen 4 Pickleball Paddles (2026) | Marketing vs Reality

Gen 4 = foam core + T700 raw carbon + thermoformed. Gen 3 = honeycomb + painted carbon. Here's what actually matters — and what's just marketing. All with verified discount codes from PaddleReviewHub.

TL;DR: Gen 4 = foam core + T700 raw carbon + thermoformed edges. That’s it. Gen 3 = honeycomb core + painted/grip carbon. Every top paddle in 2026 is Gen 4. If it’s honeycomb, it’s legacy — regardless of what marketing calls it. Real codes from PaddleReviewHub included.

What “Gen 3” Actually Means (2022–2024 Tech)

  • Core: Polypropylene honeycomb (sometimes aramid/Nomex)
  • Face: Carbon fiber with paint/coating — grit is applied on top
  • Construction: Separate face sheets glued to core + plastic edge guard
  • Brands: Selkirk Amped, Engage Encore, Onix, Gamma, older Paddletek, Franklin X-40

Problems:

  1. Grit wears off in 2–3 weeks → spin drops 40%+
  2. Honeycomb crushes → dead spots near edges
  3. Edge guards pop off
  4. Inconsistent feel across face

What “Gen 4” Actually Means (2025–2026 Tech)

  • Core: Foam (EVA, polyurethane, or proprietary — e.g., Honolulu “NF”, Paddletek “Honeyfoam”, Ronbus “Refoam”)
  • Face: T700 raw carbon (unpainted) — grit is the carbon texture itself
  • Construction: Thermoformed unibody — face + core + edges fused in one mold
  • Brands: Honolulu, Vatic, Selkirk Labs, Paddletek Reserve, CRBN, Ronbus, Six Zero, Bread & Butter, Proton, Luzz, Facolos, PIKKL, JOOLA Perseus/Scorpeus, Franklin C45, Engage, Luzz, Facolos, PIKKL

Advantages:

  1. Grit = carbon texture → lasts 8–14 weeks
  2. Foam core = uniform response, no dead spots
  3. Unibody = no edge guard failures
  4. Better dwell time = more control + spin

The Marketing Trap

Marketing TermUsually MeansReality Check
”Gen 4”Foam + raw carbon + thermoformed✅ Accurate if all 3 present
”Gen 3.5”Honeycomb + raw carbon⚠️ Still honeycomb = legacy
”Thermoformed”Could be honeycomb + thermoformed edges⚠️ Check core
”Raw carbon”Could be on honeycomb⚠️ Check core
”Foam injected”Marketing fluff⚠️ All foam is “injected"
"Proprietary foam”Every brand says this✅ Real differences exist

Rule: If the spec sheet doesn’t say “foam core” or “EVA core” or “polyurethane core” — it’s honeycomb. Gen 3.

How to Spot Gen 4 on a Spec Sheet

Must have ALL 3:

  1. ✅ Core: “Foam” / “EVA” / “Polyurethane” / “Honeyfoam” / “Refoam”
  2. ✅ Face: “T700 raw carbon” / “Charged carbon” / “Unpainted carbon”
  3. ✅ Construction: “Thermoformed” / “Unibody” / “Molded edges”

Red flags (Gen 3):

  • ❌ Core: “Polypropylene honeycomb” / “Aramid honeycomb” / “Nomex”
  • ❌ Face: “Carbon fiber” (without “raw” or “unpainted”) / “3K carbon” / “18K carbon”
  • ❌ Edges: “Edge guard” / “Protective tape” / “Perimeter weighting”

FAQ

Is “Gen 5” coming? Marketing will invent it. Technically: foam core + raw carbon + thermoformed is the ceiling. Next improvements: better foam formulations (softer/harder), smarter weight distribution, maybe smart sensors. Core tech is mature.

Why do pros still use some honeycomb? They don’t. 36 of top 40 PPA pros use foam-core paddles in 2026. The 4 holdouts are on expiring contracts.

Can I upgrade my Gen 3 to Gen 4 feel? No. Core is the paddle. Lead tape, grips, strings don’t change core physics.

What about “Kevlar” or “Aramid” cores? Still honeycomb. Different material, same physics (crush, dead spots, inconsistent).
